Sophie Wellington
Old Time Ensemble*, Intro to Fiddle*
Sophie Wellington is an old time and bluegrass fiddler and percussive dancer. She is currently finishing her final semester at Berklee College of Music with a degree in Pro Music, concentrating in Performance in vocal jazz performance and American Roots Music. She is grateful to study with some of her musical heroes including Bruce
Molsky and Darol Anger. In addition to co-leading a weekly Sunday old time jam at the Bebop since 2019, she grew up and still frequents fiddlers conventions and festivals in Southern Appalachia. At the 2021 Hoppin’ John Music Festival, Sophie took home first place in the old time fiddle contest, band contest, and flatfooting contest. She is also a founding member of Dumpster Debbie, a hard driving New England- based stringband.
Sophie is grateful to her parents for raising her in a musical home, and for bringing her into traditional music communities of southwestern Virginia. The generosity of her mentors in these communities is invaluable to her. She is dedicated to paying it forward through collaboration and sharing musical perspectives.
