THIS IS AN IN-PERSON CLASS
Learn to play the Irish bodhrán! This distinctive frame drum is played with a unique technique and forms the rhythmic foundation of traditional Irish folk music. Starting with the fundamental techniques, we’ll explore classic rhythms like the jig and reel, develop the tools to recognize these different rhythms in a traditional session, and study notable players and recordings.
Students are expected to provide their own instruments for this class.

Adam Hendey

Adam Hendey is a multi-instrumentalist, vocalist, and composer living in Boston, Massachusetts. A powerhouse accompanist with a backseat-driving style, Adam Hendey has collaborated and performed with many of traditional music’s brightest stars, including Maura Shawn Scanlin, Elias Alexander, Eliot Grasso, Éilís Kennedy, Hanneke Cassel, and Alasdair Fraser.
Taking center stage, he leads his own ensemble featuring vocalist Erin Shea Hogan, cellist Brendan Hearn, and fiddler Elias Cardoso. Together the group perform stunning arrangements of traditional and contemporary Celtic music, featuring material from Hendey’s newly released solo album “Illuminate” (2026). Four voices in harmony, fiddle, cello, and clockwork counterpoints of guitars draw listeners into an intimate sound world where the magic of old-world traditional music comes to life alongside songs and stories from New England’s vibrant folk music community. Celebrating the release of his new solo album “Illuminate,” this special concert will also feature a variety of special guest appearances by many of the album’s supporting cast.
Adam is a graduate of the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland with a Master’s degree in Traditional Music. In addition to performing, Adam is also a prolific teacher and has taught at Alasdair Fraser’s Sierra Fiddle Camp, the Acadia Festival of Traditional Music and Dance, the Community Music School of Santa Cruz, and the Passim School of Music.
