All Hallows’ Eve: Spooky tunes, songs and tales from Scotland

Orkney, Scotland fiddler Louise Bichan is joined by guitarist Conor Hearn, mandolinist Ethan Setiawan and cellist Brendan Hearn, and special guests, for an evening of Halloween music and fun from the Celtic Isles. Featuring Samhain traditions, folk tales and songs of trowies, sea serpents, and selkies. Come disguised in your best costume to fool the evil spirits, and bring your most frighteningly carved neep (turnip) or pumpkin to win a prize! (Fake candles will be available.) Children are welcome, but a few songs will include dark themes such as murder ballads.

Flynn Cohen & Laura Orshaw

Tickets will be on sale to the public 8/21 at noon. On sale to all Passim members 8/14 at noon.  On sale to All Access Passim members 8/7 at noon.

Flynn Cohen and Laura Orshaw will be performing a range of traditional and contemporary bluegrass music with harmony singing, guitar, fiddle, and mandolin. This tour marks the 20th anniversary of Flynn’s 2005 solo record Mellow Yell, which will be reissued in hard copy and released to streaming services. The original recording featured performances from a large group of Flynn’s musical collaborators at the time–Aoife O’Donovan, Rushad Eggleston, Greg Liszt, John McGann, Jake Armerding, Nate Leath, Chris Pandolfi, Eric Merrill, and Mark Schatz–and was called “a masterpiece of contemporary bluegrass” by Bluegrass Unlimited Magazine.

Joe K. Walsh

Trust and Love is a collection of instrumental love songs of a sort, beautiful melodic vignettes showcasing the power of musicians listening and reacting to each other, sensitive improvisors sharing a musical conversation and following the threads. Arriving in this Maximalist moment, this record is a gently insistent argument for a “less is more” approach to string band music, and a reminder that subtlety matters as much now as ever. This record features some of the most exciting instrumental voices in the bluegrass and folk music world: Rich Hinman (pedal steel/lap steel/guitar), Zack Hickman (bass), John Mailander (fiddle), Bobby Britt (fiddle), Dave Brophy (drums/percussion), and Joe on mandolin family instruments.
