Folkie Sing-Song Session

THIS IS AN IN-PERSON CLASS

Discover the exciting world of folk song sessions! Join your hosts, Adam Hendey and Erin Hogan—every week we’ll gather together and share our favorite songs from a variety of folk traditions, new and old.

Some core concepts the class will focus on include: developing accessible song repertoire, learning how to teach new songs to groups, finding the right key for your voice, identifying suitable material for group singing, and more. Our mission is to create a safe, friendly space for listening and singing, empowering students to lead the class in at least one song by the end of the term.

As the semester progresses, our shared class repertoire will grow, and we may even take a field trip to a local pub to host our own song session in the wild!

Guitar 1

THIS IS AN IN-PERSON SEAT IN A HYBRID CLASS

This class is for you if you’ve never played the guitar before—and maybe haven’t played any musical instrument at all. Most people are inspired to learn because they want to play their favorite songs and make music with others. If you can relate, this class will get you started on your journey to doing just that.

Each week, you’ll learn new chords and strumming techniques by learning a new song—because it’s easier and way more fun that way. Bring a guitar and a flat pick.

Janet will run this class in a hybrid format, teaching both in-person and online via Zoom. With advance notice, in-person students are welcome to attend class online if needed.

A Song That Haunts

Why do certain songs resonate and nestle themselves in your ear? In this class — part investigation, part workshop — we will explore those haunting songs by dissecting a handful of the best. We’ll get to the core of their inner workings and see how we can apply those concepts into our own writing. A Song That Haunts will be a focused study in three parts: lyrics, harmony, and structure and will give students opportunity to discuss and workshop their own songs.

This class will be held from 8:00-9:15pm on Mondays: Nov. 5, 12, 19, 26 Dec. 3, 10.

Please note: The Passim School of Music is located at 26 Church St. Cambridge, MA. Classrooms are located on the third floor and, unfortunately, we do not have an elevator.
