Sophie Wellington is an old time fiddler, guitarist, percussive dancer, and jazz vocalist. Sophie grew up in Staunton, Virginia, raised in the music communities of the blue ridge mountains by acclaimed storyteller and musician Bill Wellington and expert classical pianist Lynne Mackey. Throughout Sophie’s life, music has been a center focus professionally and recreationally. Sophie graduated from Berklee College of Music in 2022 with a degree in vocal jazz performance and a concentration in American Roots Music. Since graduating, Sophie has toured nationally and internationally with Willi Carlisle, Evie Ladin, Olive Klug, and as a solo performer. Sophie has also taught fiddle, dance, and guitar at camps and festivals including Augusta Heritage Center’s Old Time Week and Old Time Retreat in Cass, WV, Olympia Old Time Festival, the Blue Ridge Old Time Music Week at Mars Hill, NC, the Acadia Festival of Traditional Music and Dance, and various CDSS camps. Sophie’s recent work explores fiddle and ballad melodies in unique guitar tunings and arrangements for guitar and voice. This new creative direction explores Sophie’s distinct relationship to traditional music, stitching together different elements into a coherent and honest piece of music.
