Port Cities

In the brief period of time since Port Cities unleashed their award-winning incendiary debut—a wildly self-assured collection of sparkling, rootsy pop that showcases the Nova Scotia trio’s devotion to songwriting—the band’s been hard at work bringing it to the masses. They’ve continued to explore and evolve their ambitious pop sound, melding diverse musical backgrounds to create an alchemy that’s part art, part songwriting science, and all magic: the nimble dynamism of Breagh MacKinnon’s smoky, jazz-indebted delivery, Dylan Guthro’s simmering and soulful R&B swagger, and Carleton Stone’s razor-sharp, romantic rock ‘n’ roll.   It’s a chemistry that’s been perfected during the 100+ dates they’ve toured in the past year in Canada, the UK and Germany that is reflected in their newest release, Montreal.

Ariana Gillis

Hailing from just outside Toronto, Ariana Gillis began taking singing lessons at the age of six, but she was hardly thrilled. So, her father encouraged her to write her own material and learn to play the guitar. An award-winning songwriter himself, he gave her invaluable insight into the process.

However, music’s importance didn’t really become apparent until her final year of high school, when she came down with double pneumonia. She missed three months of school, and couldn’t sing properly for about a year. “Within that span of time, I realized I needed music. I craved it.”

With renewed focus, Gillis made an immediate impact on the Niagara music scene, winning Songwriter of the Year at the 2009 Niagara Music Awards, followed by Female Vocalist and Album of the Year in 2010. She networked at music conferences, which led to a quick, two-song performance for Dave Marsh in a stairwell in Memphis, following the release of her second album, Forget Me Not. Marsh then played Gillis on his Sirius XM radio show, which caught the attention of Elton John’s songwriting partner.

Canada’s Ariana Gillis was creating excitement from the earliest stages of her career. But after sustaining a serious concussion in 2015, Ariana believed that she would never be able to write and perform music again.  Well, she’s proving herself wrong, as after an extended period of recovery she’s back with new music currently being recorded with multi- GRAMMY® Award-winning producer, Joel Moss and CFMA Producer of the Year, David Gillis.

A graduate of the Boston Conservatory’s musical theater program with an emphasis in songwriting, she frequently tours the country delivering soulful pop tunes reminiscent of Carole King, Sara Bareilles and Norah Jones.

Recorded at The Vault recording studio in Hoboken, NJ with producer Dan McLoughlin of The Push Stars, her debut album “Crooked Line” released to five star reviews in 2013. “Crooked Line” features Nate Tucker on drums and percussion, Max Judelson on upright bass, Adrianne Pope on violin and Chris Trapper, also of The Push Stars, on vocals. BroadBand

Harmony at a higher Bandwidth

That’s the BroadBand signature: We create a distinctive treble sound on even the most complex arrangements. BroadBand is a Boston-area group dedicated to delivering a beautiful harmonic blend and an engaging a cappella performance experience for our audiences. We choose arrangements that are snazzy, melodic, unique. Our repertoire includes jazz, pop and contemporary styles of music.

It’s part of our mission to make a cappella entertainment accessible for fundraisers, schools and other good causes. Singing is not a day job for any of the “Broads,” so we make service to non-profits our performance priority. We are also very proud to have been selected to perform the National Anthem for the Boston Celtics (5 times and counting) and the Boston Red Sox.

Corporate Punk

“It doesn’t take long into the first listen through Corporate Punk’s debut album “Of Course” to hear that their humor is a close second only to their talent. Hot takes on love, meme-ery and modern cultural references abound in their lyrics with self-effacing millennial panache, bubbling above instrumentals you’d hear being played in Marty McFly’s band; freshly back from the future, with new material for a gig on New Year’s Eve, 1986. Giggle or dance, it’s your choice. And if you can’t yet do both at once, this album just might teach you how.”

–Mike Calabrese & Bridget Kearney (of Lake Street Dive)

Fronted by Boston-based drummer/vocalist Sean Trischka, Corporate Punk is a collaborative machine, often working with members of Oh Pep!, Lula Wiles, Josh Ritter & The Royal City Band, and The Mountain Goats.  For this show, Sean Trischka will be joined on stage by Mairi Chaimbeul, Kat McLevey, & Stash Wyslouch.

Twisted Pine

Boston’s own Twisted Pine [Boston Music Awards Americana Artist of 2021] has been on the road all summer. Now the band is looking forward to a hometown play at Passim. They return packing new work, faves, and covers. Can’t wait to see you there!

Twisted Pine has been praised by NPR for their “upbeat, poppy vibe; energetic, driving rhythms; and virtuosic solos.” Their skyrocketing pandemic release Right Now [Signature Sounds Recordings] ranges limitless from bluegrass to funk, jazz, pop, and soul. Twisted Pine is Kathleen Parks on five-string fiddle and lead vocals, Dan Bui on mandolin, Chris Sartori on upright bass, and Anh Phung on flute. “Twisted Pine doesn’t just break the rules, they rewrite them,” writes Glide.

“They were once bluegrass,” writes The Boston Globe, “but … this Boston band has become something else, a wider version of string band, boundary jumpers akin to outfits like Punch Brothers, Nickel Creek, and Crooked Still.” Photo: Blake Hannahson, in Telluride, CO

Rob Flax

Rob Flax possesses a rare combination of skills: he is an award-winning virtuoso violinist, classically trained but known for his jazz and improvisational pyrotechnics and irresistible grooves; he is also a powerhouse vocalist, capable of silky crooning a la Nat King Cole or visceral Chicago blues shouts.

Rob has performed nationally and internationally with groups of many different styles, sharing the stage with artists such as B.B. King, Tower of Power, Trans Siberian Orchestra, Jacob Collier, and many others. He has played upright bass in an Argentine tango ensemble, mandolin and fiddle in various bluegrass bands, electric violin in several rock bands, done collaborations with modern dancers, and more. As a composer Rob has written music for choreographers, film (including work on projects for James Franco and Anthony Bourdain), and several original projects. Rob is a graduate of the New England Conservatory, and he currently lives in Boston, MA.

For many years Rob performed mostly solo—it takes a special kind of musician to keep pace with Rob’s stylistic breadth and depth!—but after much searching he’s finally found a band that can keep up: Rob Flax’s Boom Chick Trio is a new “supergroup” that features Slava Tolstoy on guitar and Max Ridley on bass. Max and Slava both are incredible instrumentalists who have chops for days, but know how to balance their prowess in service of the song.

Slava Tolstoy is a Boston based guitarist, singer and producer, originally from St. Petersburg Russia. Slava’s original songs are best described as energetic pop-rock with tight arrangements, virtuoso soloing and deep and meaningful lyrics in the best traditions of Russian rock. World class musicians, including Grammy winners and nominees were carefully selected to play in Slava’s band and on his latest studio album – “Songs About the Sea” (Песни Про Море). Between 2018-2020 Slava has recorded and performed in a duo with Fedor Chistyakov – the leader of a legendary rock band “Nol”. One of Slava’s most known projects is International String Trio that fuses Gypsy Jazz with World Music, this group has toured across USA many times and gained significant national recognition.

Noah Harrington is an award-winning bassist, composer, bandleader, and educator from Lexington, Massachusetts. He is a 2019 graduate of the Berklee College of Music, with a degree in Bass Performance (Cum Laude). Harrington’s musical journey has taken him across the country and as far afield as Peru. Since 2019 Harrington has led the band “Acoustic Nomads,” blending music from North and South America to create soaring original melodies, playful improvisations, and driving grooves. Harrington also performs regularly with singer-songwriter Lindsay Foote, fiddler Mari Black, and with his bands High Horse, The Ruta Beggars, and many more.

Together, the three string-wielding maestros have forged a powerful group dynamic, developed over years of gigging and concerts, and the result is an interplay that will bring a smile to your face!
