Weird Guitar

  • Avant-Garde
  • Guitar
  • Instrumental
  • School of Music workshop

Attention adventuring and curious musicians! Presenting a unique workshop in WEIRD guitar! Open up your mind to new sounds and possibilities. For the musician looking to turn their world upside down.

Topics include:

RE-HARMONIZATION TECHNIQUES (find out how to put different chords to songs you know and love from the most basic modifications to the wildest stuff) Example: TWINKLE TWINKLE LITTLE STAR FROM ITS MOST BASIC INCARNATION INTO A NEAR-UNRECOGNIZABLE PERVERSION while still maintaining the core seedling of ‘twinkle twinkle little star.’

WEIRD OPEN CHORDS (not just your basic open-C chord!): Creative ways to find new sounds using open strings on the guitar.

THE WONDERFUL WORLD OF HARMONICS, those ethereal bells of the guitar. Learn what they are, learn how to control them, and learn how to put them into your music!

Whether we’re talking about Sgt Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club, a David Lynch film or the soundtrack to 2001: A Space Odyssey, ‘weird’ and non-intuitive sounds and sights have always found their way into our sensual world!

Pre-requisite: an open mind, willingness to experiment, a penchant for the obscure, and blind courage. A good grasp on open chords, bar chords, names of strings and ability to quickly identify a note by string name and respective fret number (ie: the command ‘play the 3rd fret on the B string with your 3rd finger’ is tangible)

“Wherever we are, what we hear is mostly noise. When we ignore it, it disturbs us. When we listen to it, we FIND IT FASCINATING” – John Cage
