How is a folk ballad different from a love song, sea shanty, or work song? Where should I learn these songs from, and do I need to play an instrument to perform them? In this quick intro to the world of traditional folk songs from Britain, Ireland and America, we will discuss the different types of songs and their characteristics, learn about a few source singers and the various resources for learning old songs, and touch on vocal style and ornamentation. Lindsay will teach several of her favorite songs with easy to learn choruses, and send you off with more resources for digging deeper into the world of British folksong on your own. No experience or instrument needed, just a willingness to sing!
