Songwriting for Overthinkers, Perfectionists, and Procrastinators

  • Alt Folk
  • Americana
  • In-Person Classes
  • Indie Folk
  • Singer/Songwriter

**THIS IS AN IN-PERSON CLASS**

Let’s jumpstart the songwriting subconscious and start growing new tunes! We’ll dive right into a bunch of exercises and prompts to bypass the “internal editor” and get into the rhythm of creating with as little filter as we can manage. Some of these exercises will be collaborative, some will be silly, and some may be sneakily emotional. There’ll be homework of the no-real-consequences variety and an emphasis on generating lots of ideas (some lyric-first and some melody-first) rather than a few finely tuned ones. In the later sessions, we’ll get into shaping, combining, and harnessing those new elements with a focus on quick, instinctual decisions as well as giving and receiving helpful feedback within your trusted circle. We’ll aim to have everyone walk out with a bank of song kernels and a fresh set of tools to help with being creative even on the inevitable “uninspired” days!
All experience levels are welcome.

This class will be held from 8:00-9:15pm ET on Tuesdays, April 30, May 7, 14, 21, 28

Don Mitchell

Don Mitchell is a songwriter, singer, multi-instrumentalist, and producer. Over the last decade and change, he’s recorded and toured extensively with Darlingside and in recent years has been producing, co-writing, scoring, and mixing in the folk world and beyond. Don grew up singing in children’s choirs, started songwriting and forming bands in high school, studied music theory and short fiction at Williams College, and other than a three-year sidequest as an ornithologist in his early 20s, has been making music in one way or another ever since. Writing songs, especially collaboratively, is just about his favorite thing to do.
