Rhythm with Signs: Collective Vocal Improvisation for Creative Musicians

  • In-Person Workshops
  • International

**THIS IS AN IN-PERSON WORKSHOP**

What if you could develop essential musical skills while experiencing the joy of creating music with others in real time?

Experience a unique form of collective vocal improvisation guided through a shared gestural language. The facilitator proposes musical possibilities through simple gestures, while the music itself is created through the listening, interaction, and creative responses of everyone in the group. Rather than following a score, participants collectively shape rhythm, texture, form, melody, accompaniment, and solos as the music unfolds in real time.

Using the voice as a shared musical language, participants strengthen rhythmic precision, harmonic listening, ensemble awareness, musical communication, and creative flexibility in a playful, highly engaging environment.

The workshop is open to musicians of all backgrounds. Whether your primary instrument is voice, guitar, piano, drums, or something else, the focus is on developing musicianship through collective music-making.

The workshop is based on Rhythm with Signs, a gestural language for conducted collective improvisation created by Argentine composer Santiago Vázquez and now practiced in more than 30 countries in artistic, educational, and community settings.

Macarena Robledo, a direct student of Santiago Vázquez, brings a vocal approach to Rhythm with Signs, enriched by her work in functional voice and neuroscience, creating an experience where musical learning, creativity, and human connection naturally support one another.

This workshop will take place at the Passim School of Music at 6:30pm ET on Monday, August 17th
