If you’ve learned many fiddle tunes from several traditional styles and now want to dig into the musical characteristics that define a particular style, this workshop is for you! What makes old-time fiddling unique is an energetic and driving bowing rhythm. A variety of bowing patterns — from the basic shuffle and saw stroke to more advanced combinations — as well as droning, rhythmic emphasis, phrasing and other subtleties are the features that put drive and beauty in these great old tunes.

Once you’ve got the basics of a tune, you’ll learn a couple of oldtime rhythmic and melodic techniques that can drive and animate the tune and give it that oldtime sound. Starting with a simple tune, you will be guided along the path to oldtime happiness.

Participants should know 20 tunes or more, feel reasonably comfortable learning by ear, play at a reasonable speed (mainly from memory) and are developing technique and jamming skills.See instructor Cathy Mason perform some Old Time Fiddling here.

This is an online, one-and-a-half hour workshop that takes place Saturday, Sept. 19th from 2pm-3:30pm.

Please note: Pre-sales are highly encouraged! Sales end 15 minutes before the masterclass begins. 3 students are required for this class to meet. If a class is cancelled due to low enrollment, you will be notified and receive a full refund.
