IN-PERSON: Beginning Fiddle

Become a better fiddler and get ready to have fun!
You’ll learn some engaging and accessible traditional American fiddle tunes that are a unique combination of music of the early Scotch-Irish and African occupants of this country as well as some other uniquely American fiddle Styles from the Cajun and Creole traditions. Other traditional fiddle styles including Irish, Scottish and French Canadian also may be included!
Basic fiddle techniques of ear training, tone, timing and style will be taught in the context of specific tunes.
Instruction will be by ear, but notation will be available along with slowed down video recordings of the tunes.
Prerequisites: Students should have a basic knowledge, be able to hold the fiddle and bow.
This class will be held from 6:30-7:45pm ET on Thursdays, Sept. 16, 23, 30, Oct. 7, 14, 28
Please note:The class will be held at The Passim School of Music which is located at 26 Church St. Cambridge, MA. Classrooms are located on the third floor and, unfortunately, we do not have an elevator.
Limited to 7 students (16 yrs of age or older); Pre-sales are highly encouraged! Online sale ends 1 hour before the class begins. Cathy teaches private lessons in person and by video, as well as workshops and classes to students of all ages. She believes that musical skill and passion develop, rather than being bestowed and loves helping students master the interplay between physical, mental, emotional and logistical factors that lead to musical satisfaction and improvement.
Cathy has specialized in American traditional fiddle music, primarily Old Time string band and vocal styles, as well as the Cajun and Creole music of Southwest Louisiana for the past several decades. Cathy’s solo and ensemble playing conveys the soulful, haunting beauty and the quirky, rhythmic drive of these styles. She performs at dances, parties and concerts all over the east coast and south with her bands, The Dead Sea Squirrels and The High Strung Strummers as well as with other musicians. She has been a winner of several awards at the Lowell Fiddle and Banjo contest, been on the staff at dance and music camps.
