Crafting a Story: Songwriting for Beginners

This course will focus on the basic elements of songwriting: storytelling and melody. We will learn tools to write songs in new ways, and elevate your songs through workshops and feedback. The course will have a strong emphasis on lyric, story, and melody, and will also explore harmony and rhythm. In addition to learning how to write songs, we will create structure for inviting creativity into our songwriting practice. This course will include free writes and writing prompts, songwriting critique, and exploring new songwriting tools to expand your skillset. 

Class topics include: exploring tension in songwriting, showing and telling, playing with point of view, and more. The class will be tailored to fit the needs of the individuals in the group. The outcome will be for students to enhance and expand their songwriting technique and build confidence in writing songs in new ways.

This class will be held from 6:30pm-7:45pm ET on Mondays, May 10, 17, 24, June 7, 14, 21

Please note: Limited to 12 students (16 yrs of age or older); Pre-sales are highly encouraged! Sales end 15 minutes before the class begins. 3 students are required for this class to meet. If a class is cancelled due to low enrollment, you will be notified and receive a full refund.

Naomi Westwater

Naomi Westwater (she/they) is an Americana musician and dabbles in electronic music and production. Like a rose with many petals, Naomi’s music is layered, striking, and tender. She holds a Master of Music in Contemporary Performance and Production from Berklee College of Music and was nominated for a 2021 Boston Music Award for best singer-songwriter. They have been featured in WBUR’s The Artery, Vanyaland, WGBH, Under The Radar, Atwoods Magazine, and The Bluegrass Situation.
