How do I register for a class?
There are three ways to register for a class in the School of Music. You may do so by calling Jon at 617-492-5300 between 10AM and 6PM on weekdays. You may also register online; go to the class sign-up section on the Passim website [link to 3.2 Classes & Workshops]. You are able to register for any class online, 24 hours a day, until noon on the first day of the class. If you’d like to register for a class in person, visit the Club Passim box office in advance or come to the School of Music on the first night of the class.

How much do classes cost?
Most classes cost $140 for nonmembers and  $120 for members. Ensemble classes cost $160 for nonmembers and $140 for members. Private lessons are $165 for nonmembers and $150 for members. The class description will note any differences in costs.

How long do classes last?
Most classes run for 6 weeks, meeting for 1 hour 15 minutes each week. The class description will note any differences in length.

How do I know which class to sign up for?
Check out the course descriptions. If your question is not answered there, then please email Jon with a quick overview of your skill level. He will advise you on the appropriate class level for you and may put you in touch with the instructor.

What should I do if I have signed up for a class that is the wrong level for me?
If you think your class is the wrong level for you, please notify your teacher and the Program Manager, Jon, after the first class, and you may transfer to a different course or take a credit for the future. To get in touch with Jon, you may either send an email or call 617.492.5300.

What should I do if something comes up, and I can’t attend most of the class sessions?
If the class is less than a week away, we do not offer refunds. If you notify Jon before the second week of class, you may receive credit to take another class at the School of Music in the future. After the second week of classes, we are unable to offer credits. This policy exists to ensure that we have enough students to run classes once they have begun. A changing class roster makes it difficult for instructors to create lesson plans and run classes, so this policy encourages students to be committed to their classes. Please email Jon or call 617.492.5300 if you have a question about this. Click here for more information about our policies.

May I register for a class once it has started?
Yes, you can as long as the class is not full. Please call Jon at 617.492.5300 to confirm that there are spots available. We do not pro-rate classes, so the class will still cost the full amount if you register after the first class.

How do I know if class is meeting during a snowstorm?
If an instructor can get to class, the class will still meet. If the instructor is unable to make it to class due to poor weather, we will contact students by phone and/or email by 3PM on the day of the class.

You may also check the Passim website or call 617.492.5300 for cancellation information.

What is the makeup policy for missed classes?
With group classes, we do not schedule makeups for student absences. However, your instructor may be able to email you some exercises or songs to practice and may be willing to meet with you for a few minutes before your next class.  It is up to the instructor to determine whether he or she is able to do so.

Makeups for group classes and ensembles will only be made for classes postponed by holidays, instructor’s request, or extreme weather. If this is the case, we will add a session at the end of the term as a makeup date.

Private lesson students are entitled to one makeup date per term, provided that you notify the instructor at least 24 hours in advance of your scheduled lesson. You and your instructor will find a mutually acceptable makeup date by the end of the term.  Private lessons are only 30 minutes long, so we ask that you arrive on time in order to get the most out of your lesson.

Are scholarships available for School of Music classes?

Yes, please email Jon and request information about the scholarship opportunities. We typically offer partial scholarships to deserving individuals who demonstrate a dedication to the class and music and who are unable to afford the full financial burden of the class. Please do not register for a class online if you intend to apply for a scholarship. Jon can reserve a spot for you until you have completed the scholarship application to ensure that you get into the class.

Does the School of Music sell gift cards that I can give to my friends?
