Dave Carter and I started the Writers Round-up in Portland, Ore. more than 10 years ago. The motive was to create community among local up-and-coming songwriters while also giving them a taste of what nationally-touring artists were up to. We'd invite two or three outstanding nationally-touring songwriters to perform 35-minute sets, and in between those sets, we'd draw names of local songwriters from a big cowboy hat and invite those folks up to play a song or two as a "tweener." Great fun for everyone involved, and a tradition I keep going in this annual event. In the Dave Carter Memorial Writers Round-up, I invite outstanding songwriters to perform half hour featured sets. The "tweeners" are invited up to play their favorite Dave Carter songs. And I bookend the night with short sets of my own, offering stories and/or little-heard or unpublished songs, usually closing with a singalong. The event is very special as it both honors and promotes the music of Dave Carter and benefits the Passim School of Music, who keeps half the door proceeds. I am grateful to Matt Smith for his support of this important legacy, and grateful to all our fans and fellow troubadors who come together at events like this one to keep the flame of Dave Carter's legacy burning bright. It couldn't be done any other way. - Tracy Grammer
